Andy Murray’s poor finish to the season continued with a fourth defeat in five matches despite a marathon effort against Tomas Martin Etcheverry in Basel casino
British number three Murray had snapped a three-match losing streak with a hard-fought victory over Yannick Hanfmann on Monday and claimed the first set of this last-16 tie at the Swiss Indoors casino
Etcheverry, ranked eight places above Murray in 32nd, was able to fight back impressively and it was the Argentinian who prevailed 6-7 (5) 6-3 6-2 after a three-hour-and-eight-minute battle casino
The early exchanges of set one proved an insight into what was in store for an excitable crowd at the ATP 500 event with breaks traded by both players casino
After Murray was broken in his first service game, he responded with a superb lob for break point before a volley at the net got the tie back on serve at 2-2 casino
A tie-break was eventually required and a classy drop shot helped three-time grand-slam champion Murray draw first blood casino
The 84-minute set appeared to take its toll on Murray at the beginning of the second with Etcheverry able to establish an early advantage and he saved four break points in a lengthy seventh game on his way to forcing a decider casino
Murray was struggling physically by this point and a racket felt the force of his anger despite the Swiss crowd cheering him on casino
Etcheverry was in the ascendancy now though and set up match point with a superb passing stroke before a service winner sent him through to the last eight casino
Elsewhere, Cameron Norrie had no answer to world number 10 Alexander Zverev in the second round of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna casino
Zverev had won the first three meetings casino between the top-20 players and claimed a fourth in a row with an emphatic 6-2 6-4 victory casino
A superb backhand winner down the line earned Zverev a break in Norrie’s first service game and the British number one was broken again before losing the first set in 36 minutes casino
Norrie tried to wrestle his way back into the contest, but was broken again in the third game of the second set casino
It remained on serve until Norrie forced two break opportunities when Zverev was serving for the match and yet the German responded by winning four consecutive points to close out a solid win, which makes it four defeats in five for last year’s Wimbledon semi-finalist casino

This Manchester United victory may not have been anywhere near as beautiful as any of those Sir Bobby Charlton graced, or indeed that tribute to his life, but it displayed some of the club’s soul that he made famous casino
Because this was obviously about so much more than just beating FC Copenhagen 1-0 late on, or indeed staying in the competition the club’s legend was most built on casino
It was certainly about so much more for Andre Onana, who had his first great moment at Manchester United in what was a must-win game casino
That was maybe what Charlton would have most enjoyed casino
Doing it when it mattered casino
A night that started with a gracefully poignant mourning of the great man ended with more appropriate celebration casino
It ended with deafening and defiant roar, in celebration of a player who has struggled in his first few weeks, in memory of a player who was perhaps the club’s greatest casino
And a player that has been pilloried and unpicked in Harry Maguire displayed defiance, scoring the winner for a relatively late 1-0 win casino
Onana then stepped up by getting it done, keeping it at 1-0 in the 96th minute, and keeping United in this great competition casino
The manner of that may not be how anyone wants this great institution to look right now but it was perseverance, exactly what Charlton, his manager and so many of his teammates would have asked for casino
United’s players celebrate Onana’s last-gasp save (Getty Images)The defeated Copenhagen also offered their own memorable contribution to the night beyond a respectable display that made United work, and that final penalty miss by Jordan Larsson casino
Before the game and throughout, they echoed the Stretford End in singing “there’s only one Bobby Charlton” casino
The rest of Old Trafford applauded casino
It should be recognised that wasn’t the sentiment that greeted most of the action casino
This was mostly another poor performance against a limited team, even if it was a third consecutive victory casino
Little of it beyond the context will live in the memory casino
Most would rather forget it casino
The problem is that it all informs what will be a game that really demands a performance on Sunday, which is the visit of Manchester City for the derby casino
United will need to be far sharper casino
Some allowances should be made, of course casino
Maguire went from zero to hero with a crucial goal for United (Getty Images)Such is the sense of history at United, that these sombre occasions have had the effect of subduing performance casino
It is as if the beauty of the bagpipes sounding that the club “will never die” makes everyone all too keenly aware of the legacy they are playing for casino
It happened on the 40th and 50th anniversaries of the Munich air disaster, dates which brought a 1-1 draw at home to Bolton Wanderers and a 2-1 defeat to a pre-Abu Dhabi Manchester City, respectively casino
One difference was that both of those sides were defending champions so, as with those last two wins, this felt like there was more to it than United feeling the weight of the occasion casino
It was really like a lot of matches at Old Trafford this season, right down to the way an inferior-resourced opposition side controlled long periods of the game in a way that shouldn’t really have been possible casino
The only proper action of the first half actually came very quickly after the tributes casino
Mohamed Elyounoussi just cut through Sofyan Amrabat and Maguire at first, in a way that really shouldn’t have happened, then sending a cross over for Diogo to bounce against the post casino
If there were initially fears this could become another chaotic back-and-forth like the Galatasaray defeat, it never got that entertaining, certainly in the first half casino
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag lays a wreath in tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton (PA Wire)Other than some moments of spark from Rasmus Hojlund, almost nothing happened casino
Ten Hag had to try something casino
Amrabat was removed casino
That did see United play a bit more directly, seeking to stretch the pitch more casino
Hojlund again offered constant warnings, and almost won a penalty straight into the second half casino
Marcus Rashford was even put through on goal, only to take a heavy touch casino
There were, very gradually, however, some positives casino
Onana looked at his most assured, making one fine save casino
It was all the more important since the Champions League has been the stage for arguably two of his biggest errors so far casino
That, like a lot on the night, made this more important than the individual moment casino
United’s was soon to come casino
Christian Eriksen, who came on for Amrabat, made the delivery casino
Maguire made the impact casino
The centre-half headed home casino
United should have been secured casino
An anxiety remained casino
It was casino betrayed by McTominay’s late foul casino
So much for the midfielder being a constant saviour casino
It was all just prelude and set-up casino
Onana stepped up casino
It was perhaps the most fitting tribute possible casino
