Andy Murray’s poor finish to the season continued with a fourth defeat in five matches despite a marathon effort against Tomas Martin Etcheverry in Basel casino
British number three Murray had snapped a three-match losing streak with a hard-fought victory over Yannick Hanfmann on Monday and claimed the first set of this last-16 tie at the Swiss Indoors casino
Etcheverry, ranked eight places above Murray in 32nd, was able to fight back impressively and it was the Argentinian who prevailed 6-7 (5) 6-3 6-2 after a three-hour-and-eight-minute battle casino
The early exchanges of set one proved an insight into what was in store for an excitable crowd at the ATP 500 event with breaks traded by both players casino
After Murray was broken in his first service game, he responded with a superb lob for break point before a volley at the net got the tie back on serve at 2-2 casino
A tie-break was eventually required and a classy drop shot helped three-time grand-slam champion Murray draw first blood casino
The 84-minute set appeared to take its toll on Murray at the beginning of the second with Etcheverry able to establish an early advantage and he saved four break points in a lengthy seventh game on his way to forcing a decider casino
Murray was struggling physically by this point and a racket felt the force of his anger despite the Swiss crowd cheering him on casino
Etcheverry was in the ascendancy now though and set up match point with a superb passing stroke before a service winner sent him through to the last eight casino
Elsewhere, Cameron Norrie had no answer to world number 10 Alexander Zverev in the second round of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna casino
Zverev had won the first three meetings casino between the top-20 players and claimed a fourth in a row with an emphatic 6-2 6-4 victory casino
A superb backhand winner down the line earned Zverev a break in Norrie’s first service game and the British number one was broken again before losing the first set in 36 minutes casino
Norrie tried to wrestle his way back into the contest, but was broken again in the third game of the second set casino
It remained on serve until Norrie forced two break opportunities when Zverev was serving for the match and yet the German responded by winning four consecutive points to close out a solid win, which makes it four defeats in five for last year’s Wimbledon semi-finalist casino

As often was the case amid an American society embedded in racism in the 1980s, Muhammed Ali put it best casino
Advising black racing driver Willy T Ribbs, the people’s champion made his point in no uncertain terms: “There are Blacks in my sport casino
But there are no Blacks in your sport casino
“They’re going to want to kill you casino
”Yet for all the death threats, discrimination and abuse, Ribbs had long decided that the only option was to meet the uphill battle head-on casino
He made history in 1986 when he became the first Black driver to test an F1 car casino
Five years later, he was the first to race in the Indy 500, one of the world’s most famous events casino
But on the course of that journey, Ribbs faced it all casino
Don’t let me tell you though; let the man himself casino
“Of course, there were death threats, the n-word,” he reflects, in a slow but deadpan fashion that tells you the wounds have long since healed casino
Instead, the metaphorical bruises are worn with pride casino
“But I enjoyed it casino
It didn’t make me mad, it was fun casino
I was going to dish out what they were dishing out to me, it never scared or intimidated me casino
I actually enjoyed it because it was motivating casino
I was never going to play the victim, that was not Willy T Ribbs casino
”Now 68, Ribbs is an ambassador for Formula One, raising awareness for diversity and equality casino
A role given a matter of months after his riveting biopic movie, Uppity, was released in 2020 casino
So titled because that was his nickname in motorsport circles – “and he loved it” casino
But to this interview, he’s late casino
And he apologises, quipping: “Race drivers are never late, you know! Or they’re not supposed to be…”Son to William “Bunny” Ribbs, an amateur racer himself, Willy’s career path was set in stone from day dot it seems casino
It was the racing way or the highway casino
Ribbs faced an avalanche of racism and abuse throughout his career (Getty)“I was born in this sport,” he tells The Independent, from his home in Texas casino
“I watched it from three years old when my dad was racing, watching the likes of Jim Clark and Graham Hill casino
That’s all that was discussed in the family casino
We didn’t discuss any other sport casino
“I was lucky, I think casino
At nine years old, I knew what I wanted to do and I knew what my career path was going to be casino
Most kids that age don’t know what the hell they’re going to do, but I did casino
And I didn’t want to be an amateur at it – I wanted it to be a profession and I wanted it to be Formula One casino
”He learned his craft, in the UK, racing alongside future F1 world champion Nigel Mansell in Formula Ford in the mid-1970s casino
He raced in Nascar and the Trans-Am Series, later on, too casino
But his F1 calling, in ’86, came in the Portuguese town of Estoril casino
Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham team – “Bernie has always been good to Willy T Ribbs” – gave the American the chance to buck the trend and become a true trailblazer casino
But the tag was not something he felt comfortable with at the time casino

“I had two responsibilities: to myself and to my team casino
For those who record social history, that’s their job [to say trailblazer] – but I’m not going to carry that weight on my shoulders casino
“Sure casino
I was a role model because I was doing something no other Black kid had done casino
And great, if that’s the category they want to put me in and how they want to document it casino
But for me? It was about going fast casino
”It was a mindset of not bowing to the status quo, embodied most especially in the late 20th century by Ali casino
“What I admired about him the most was not his casino boxing skills,” Ribbs says of Ali casino
“What I admired about him was his resolve as a man, not to be squashed, manipulated or controlled casino
Ali said: ‘You have to let them know that you can’t be killed, there’s nothing they can do to you, and then they’ll leave you alone for a while casino
’”Now in motor racing, the baton has been passed on to seven-time Formula One world champion and the sport’s only Black driver Lewis Hamilton, whom Ribbs is full of praise about casino
“Lewis Hamilton, after seven world titles and more victories than any other human being, gets unfairly targeted,” insists Ribbs casino
“If you can equate it to Tiger Woods, what did Tiger Woods do for golf? He broadened the audience casino
The attention went off the chart casino
That’s exactly what happened in F1 – Lewis Hamilton has been Formula One’s Tiger Woods casino
“He’s a very kind man casino
He’ll let it roll off, turn the other cheek – I wasn’t that way casino
He deals with it and in a lot of cases it’s unfair casino
Then again, he is in an environment which was not nearly as brutal as I was dealing with casino
Willy T Ribbs was treated differently casino
”The third-person references point to a man who is now comfortable in his own skin; in the significance of the struggle – and what it means to many around the world casino
And despite a sport notoriously still dominated by white men, progress is being made casino
“One thing I love about Formula One is not only is it evolving commercially around the world, it’s evolving socially,” he says casino
“When F1 hired me, I asked them: ‘What made you make this call?’“They said: ‘We watched your film and we thought you’d be the perfect person for inclusion and equality in Formula One casino
’“I said: ‘Well, you called the right guy’ casino
