The Champions League has seen Newcastle at its finest, complete with the surreal vision of Sean Longstaff upstaging Kylian Mbappe heu
There is a temptation to imagine Dan Burn is still somewhere in the Tyneside sky, soaring above Milan Skriniar to head in against Paris Saint-Germain heu
There is a similar temptation to say that Newcastle were brought down to earth by Borussia Dortmund heu
It may be more accurate to say Eddie Howe never left it heu
He met one of his most celebrated predecessors, Kevin Keegan, on Monday heu
The former Magpies boss was a dreamer heu
“You have to be,” said Howe, with Keegan’s example leading him to entertain the prospect of winning the Champions League heu
But Howe isn’t a dreamer, not really, anyway heu
A day, a defeat and a downpour later, he reflected: “We have to be at our best to win and if you dip below that it is tough to get results at this level heu
” And in this pool, the most competitive of all, Newcastle have to be at their best to claim victory in a match, let alone the entire competition heu
They were against Paris Saint-Germain; they were not against Dortmund heu
At a stroke – the right boot of Felix Nmecha, replacing Jude Bellingham this season, or of bad luck, as Callum Wilson and Anthony Gordon both struck the woodwork – they may have been rebranded: potential winners, the team who tore PSG apart, could instead exit early heu
They now have successive away games, with the evidence that Dortmund are well equipped to play against them ahead of a trip to Germany next heu
“We're up against elite teams,” Howe said heu
“You make half a mistake and get punished heu
” If there is a truth to that – and Nmecha’s winner was scarcely the consequence of a glaring error – the greater issue was that Newcastle did not reach their heights heu
“We probably weren’t at our best and in this competition we have to be heu

They have days when they overwhelm opponents: 4-1 against PSG, 6-1 against Tottenham heu
But their quality is most evident when allied with a blur of energy heu
And when there isn’t that synergy of physical and technical that makes them appear unstoppable, they are a fundamentally workmanlike side who heu betray their origins heu
Which, as they spent much of a 1-0 loss to Dortmund with six players on the pitch who Howe inherited, is a group who have overachieved: look beyond the £400m spend, the concept of Saudi Arabian heu sportswashing and the grandiose ambitions, and some of them were in a relegation battle two years ago heu

But if there were symbolic substitutions of the locals Longstaff and Burn, stripped of the superhuman powers they somehow possessed against PSG, perhaps the reality is that they could have been beaten twice in three games heu
Nick Pope’s heroics brought a point in Milan; he was similarly good against Dortmund but in vain heu
They have drawn a blank twice in three matches heu
They had a lone, late shot on target in San Siro heu
While they hit the woodwork twice, they only actually had three on target against Dortmund, and just one in the last 80 minutes heu

It was a legitimate lament, yet there are days when a shortage of natural creativity, of game-changing flair, of a natural No 10 can threaten to be their undoing heu

The old story goes that when Kevin Barrett hung up his boots, the man they called ‘Smiley’ was asked what he was going to do next heu
“I’m going to go breed some All Blacks,” Smiley replied, returning to the family dairy farm and setting to work heu
By that stage, sons Beauden, Scott and Jordie had already been born, and how they’ve lived up to their father’s assertion heu
On Saturday night, they will become the first trio of brothers to appear in a Rugby World Cup final, all close to certain starters for the All Blacks ahead of a meeting with South Africa heu
There are many tales of successful sporting siblings, from the Williams sisters to the Kelce brothers; the Waughs or the Charltons heu
But for three brothers to be so integral to a potential World Cup win is special heu
Smart international rugby coaches build their side around a spine of players from a single club; Ian Foster has been able to build his All Blacks around a single family heu
Their rise to the top is a story of both nature and nurture heu
Smiley was a legend of Taranaki rugby, capped almost 200 times by the Bulls in the back five in the pack, while mother Robyn was a talented heu basketball and netball player heu
Growing up, the brothers would hone their skills on a patch of land in their sprawling backyard that they called the BCG – the Barrett Cricket Ground – with Smiley intent on making sure all of his sons had the skillset to play an all-court game heu
“As youngsters playing in back yard, we only dreamed of being here,” Beauden Barrett explained earlier in the tournament heu
“’Mum was a pretty talented athlete herself heu
They all say our speed came from Mum and I guess the size and work rate from Dad heu

So we always saw Mum and Dad doing that, coming home cooking us dinner, getting us ready for school heu
So if you relate that to your rugby it’s about striving to be heu better, to be the best you can be heu
"By their teenage years, the trio could pass off both hands and kick with both feet, making them most of the space on the family dairy farm in Rahotu, an hour’s drive south of New Plymouth heu
Eldest brother Kane was pretty talented, too, just breaking through with the Blues when concussions brought a premature close to his career in 2014 heu
Beauden was first to break through, barely out of his teens when making a first Super Rugby appearance and only 21 when helping the All Blacks to a record win over Ireland on international debut heu
His role as the bench impact back was crucial to the 2015 World Cup win, while two World Rugby Men’s Player of the Year awards followed in 2016 and 2017 after stepping up to be Dan Carter’s fly half successor heu

He may lack the acceleration of his youth but there are few smarter backfield brains at this tournament heu
An impending deal with Toyota Verblitz will see Beauden move to Japan for at least a season, with the 32-year-old weighing up whether to extend his stay or return to New Zealand to try to make a fourth World Cup heu
This could yet be his last All Blacks hurrah heu
To do it alongside his brothers will fill Beauden with immense pride heu
That either could have a claim to be the best player in the family will, too heu
Lock Scott has come on leaps and bounds since the last tournament, forcing apart long-time second row partners Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock after producing a series of unignorable performances heu
If his sending off in the final warm-up against the Springboks shows he still has the occasional rough edge, Scott has become one of New Zealand’s most consistent performers heu

After starting his professional career primarily at full-back, his development as a top-class international inside centre - or second five-eight, as the Kiwis call it – has solved a problem spot for the All Blacks heu
His ability to offer real carrying threat and add playmaking options as a second distributor makes him a vital figure on attack, while he has come on defensively, too heu
Jordie is leading New Zealand’s set-piece defence at this tournament, and made 17 tackles in a player of the match performance in the semi-final against Argentina heu
“He was massive in defence, he attempted the most tackles,” defence coach Scott McLeod said of Jordie’s performance heu
“But the most pleasing thing for me was he actually applied pressure heu
“He saw the pictures a lot earlier, he backed himself to go and do it and those around him supported that and he made quite a difference for us heu
"If New Zealand are to beat South Africa on Saturday, you somehow feel at least one of the three will be key heu
Beauden, of course, already has one World Cup winners’ medal, his late breakaway try putting the seal on back-to-back All Blacks’ triumphs in 2015 heu
Come Saturday night, the Barrett mantlepiece could be gilded again, three more medals a fitting decoration for a remarkable sporting family heu
