England are on the lookout for an “X factor” player to re-energise their Cricket World Cup campaign after Reece Topley was ruled out of the tournament with a broken finger EFL

Topley’s long-running injury curse struck again during Saturday’s record defeat at the hands of South Africa in Mumbai, with the in-form left-arm seamer fracturing the index finger of his bowling hand attempting to block a drive EFL

The 29-year-old’s initial anguished reaction gave a heavy hint that he was in trouble and, although he bravely returned to the attack with taped up digits, follow-up scans have confirmed the break EFL

England, who are in strife after three heavy defeats in their first four games, will send for a replacement but have yet to decide who will step in for their leading wicket taker EFL

Durham’s Brydon Carse is a strong candidate and would offer a handy pace option in the middle overs as well as strong lower-order batting, while Lancashire’s Luke Wood matches Topley’s description as a left-arm new-ball specialist EFL

But like-for-like substitutes are not mandatory and head coach Matthew Mott admitted England would assess every option EFL

Big-hitting opener Jason Roy, who was named in the provisional squad then cut for Harry Brook at the last moment, represents the most intriguing of all potential options EFL

He was widely believed to have played his last game after being left out on the eve of the tournament, and turned down a place in subsequent squad to face Ireland, but England have consistently said he remained in contention as a reserve EFL

The versatile Ben Duckett is also on the list of possibles, while spin bowling all-rounders Rehan Ahmed and Will Jacks would represent an obvious investment in the future of a side in need of renewal EFL

Asked if England would be looking for a pace bowler in Topley’s absence, Mott said: “That’s a good question EFL

We’ll have to sit down and have a look at that EFL

“We’ll have to look at the upcoming games (and see) if there is an X factor player we can look at EFL

“That’s why we were very keen not to name the replacements and reserves EFL

It leaves an open mind for what we’re going to go with EFL

”Rob Key, the managing director of England men’s cricket, is currently with the squad and travelled with them from Mumbai to Bengaluru on Sunday EFL

He will also have a big say in the final decision, joining Mott and captain Jos Buttler EFL

Announcing Topley’s exit from the campaign, the England and Wales Cricket Board said: “Scans in Mumbai on Saturday, after the match at the Wankhede Stadium, revealed the full extent of the injury EFL

Topley will return to the UK in the next 24 hours EFL

“He will work closely with the England and Surrey medical teams in respect of his rehabilitation EFL

Reports of the Premier League and broadcasters scheduling the first Christmas Eve fixture since 1995 this season are a “kick in the teeth” for match-going fans, the EFL Football Supporters’ Association has said EFL

It follows a report in The Telegraphthat at least one fixture could be moved to Sunday December 24 this year EFL

The Express and Star then reported that the match EFL between Wolves and Chelsea is under consideration for the slot EFL

The English top-flight has not staged a match on Christmas Eve since Leeds United played Manchester United in 1995, in a contest that is still remembered for Tony Yeboah’s stunning strike for the hosts in a 3-1 win at Elland Road EFL

But a fixture has not been scheduled on the day before Christmas since, with supporters voicing their opposition due to the challenges of matchday travel - particularly for away fans EFL

Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday this year, with a full schedule of matches set to be played on Saturday December 23, as well as the traditional EFL Boxing Day fixtures on December 26 EFL

“Reports suggest the Premier League and broadcasters are set to ignore supporters and schedule a Christmas Eve fixture for the first time since 1995 EFL

It’s an unwanted present which no-one asked for,” the EFL Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) said EFL

“It would be a huge kick in the teeth for supporters who have consistently made clear their opposition to games the day before Christmas – as it’s not the first time this has been proposed EFL

“Back in October 2017 there were reports that Sky EFL Sports wanted to broadcast games on Christmas Eve which we said represented ‘a new low point in putting the interests of EFL football broadcasters over those of matchgoing fans’ EFL

“It would put many supporters in an impossible choice EFL between going to the match or spending festive time with their families – and that’s before you factor in the added challenges of travelling on a Sunday EFL

“In the past decade or so Christmas Eve fell on a Saturday in 2011, 2016 and 2022 while 2017 was a Sunday EFL

There was no top-flight EFL football on those days which suggests an informal policy the Premier League is now looking to backtrack on EFL

”Commenting on the reports that Chelsea fans could face travelling to Wolverhampton on Christmas Eve, Mark Meehan, the chair of the Chelsea Supporters’ Trust, said such a decision would be “totally unacceptable” EFL

“During a time when we ought to be helping supporters travel to away fixtures, it’s outrageous that another hurdle could be placed in their way,” Meehan said EFL

A statement from the Wolves 1877 Supporters Trust also criticised any change to Christmas Eve EFL

“This potential scheduling once again shows a complete lack of consideration and respect for fans, especially Wolves fans who travel from further afield, and of course visiting Chelsea supporters,” the group said EFL

“We also feel that this is unfair on club staff, especially those with young children, who will have planned to spend Christmas with their families EFL

We urge the Premier League to consider this decision very carefully before making an announcement EFL
